March 28th

Quick post today.

The way that you use it

It’s out!

Today, my fifteenth published effort has been released. It’s out in print. It’s out for Kindle. It’s out with Kindle Unlimited.

“Bring on the apple crisp” – “Dumb old Bob and the dashboard of doom” – “Not a peep” – “The wildflowers” – “My dime, your dime, our dime” – “Welcome to the chaos” – “Not when I was young” – and so much more.

A great assembly of sixty-four essays drawn from two years of the newsletter with a few written exclusively for this book. The effort is the fourth published collection of essays from the run of A Parkside View.

Add it to your library (and enjoy).

I wanted it. You wanted it. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Coming our way in September. (Go ahead. Say the name.)

Work has begun on the sequel for The Accountant. First film was outstanding, and most of the cast is returning. This should be fantastic.

March 21st

Decades ago, I was in a car, playing the alphabet game.

You know it…

“…I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing A apple, B banana, C cookies, D…”

Borders a bit on educational. Since it always involves kids, it’s more an attempt at distraction. And, until those kids become obsessed with it to a point that every time the car starts a new round of the game is requested, it’s an easy way to get them invested in something beyond a complete assault on your sanity.

(Look, almost all of us know the game. And, almost all of us know kids that can turn the game into a maddening exercise. It happens. No good deed and all that. Back to the decades ago part…)

At some point, for reasons I don’t recall, someone had been assigned the letter D and in a mad scramble they said it: Dumb Old Bob.

It stuck.

In glorious, humbling, pride raising fashion, it stuck. From that moment on, any time we went on a road trip game to the zoo, on a picnic, away for a vacation, or more, Dumb Old Bob was along for the journey.

Now that name is moving into something new for In My Backpack.

We are in the testing phase of material that will ultimately be getting released as a podcast. It’s a lot of work so far. Fun, thrilling work. Still, work. Lots to consider, develop, learn and debate. Plenty of things to excited about. Plenty of things to look over from a variety of angles, only to ultimately put off to the side.

Thoughts are being given to a variety of possibilities. As an example, many of you know that for several years I have been presenting a workshop of sorts about writing called You may never get published (Horror stories and thoughts to help you try anyway). That program led to some groundwork for a book about writing and publishing, which would work nicely as a podcast thought.

For now, many of those ideas are off to the side. Some more likely than others to be looked into more thoroughly and moved along later. What is nearing its first episode…

Dumb Old Bob: The Essays

At the center of things, we’ll be using some of my older, published and posted material. Much like an audiobook, an essay will be read. Then, I’ll likely go into a little bit of depth about it, based on what inspired the effort and potentially areas that I think might be interesting to share.

In a few weeks… exact date hasn’t been selected, but April into May is the likely window for a debut… the first episode should be ready to go. We’ll have details about places where you can find it, ongoing release plans and more, as we move the process closer to finished material that’s ready to put out there. Very excited about sharing this work with you soon.

Speaking about sharing work soon…

…the new book…

We’re celebrating the anniversary of the In My Backpack site this month, along with the release of my fifteenth book. (And that clock begins tomorrow, March 22nd.)

TakeLessons

Today’s announcement is an exciting one for me.

Over the years, I’ve been thrilled to offer a writing seminar: You may never get published (Horror stories and thoughts to help you try anyway).

I love each and every appearance I get to make. Incredibly grateful for the opportunities, appreciate the trust given to me, and always end up meeting incredible people. That includes the fantastic teams at the locations I’m visiting, and the incredible folks attending. Great, great stuff.

That understood, the writing programs are particularly exciting for me, and I’ve been told the material is interesting and informative for those in attendance. It’s been well-received, and in addition to delivering it at libraries in multiple states here in the U.S., I was honored to bring it to Australia last summer.

(Yup, I’ve been on a world tour. True international event.)

During my writing career, and often as a result of these workshops, I have been asked if I could work with writers, providing something of a teaching or tutoring situation. Unfortunately, until now, it has been difficult to establish connections and opportunities that would work for my schedule and for those wishing to work with me.

I have now connected with TakeLessons as a way of working with writers. After a lot of research and consideration, it has emerged as the best platform for continuing and expanding this program, and offer my experience, knowledge and guidance to those that might be looking for it.

Everything is being finalized right now, and I’ll have more to share about this very soon. If you—or someone you know—is interested in learning about writing and publishing, I hope you’ll keep this in mind and share my name with them. (Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.)

Thank you.

March 14th

On Tuesday, March 26th, Bob will be releasing his fifteenth effort.

A Parkside View: Volumes 7 & 8 will be available in both print and Kindle editions on the publication day.

March is also a special month around In My Backpack. This year marks the twenty-first anniversary of the website.

As part of all the celebrations for the book and the site, between March 22nd and March 26th we will be running a special Kindle promotion on three of Bob’s previous releases. The third film in the Venom run… which all material released about it so far claiming it will be the last of the Tom hardy run… has an official title other than Venom 3 and a release date that’s been moved forward. Run so far has been A LOT of fun, so be looking for Venom: The Last Dance in late October.

Objectively it’s not a fact

March 12th

Going to begin a run of some terrific announcements later this week. For today, basic entry…

News of a movie sequel from Spinal Tap has been out there for a bit. The big takeaway now is a release may happen for the project later in 2024. With a thin line between stupid and clever, this will be one to watch.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a sequel. Not exactly a surprise given the success of the first animated feature. Look for the next installment in what is certainly a new franchise of films to arrive in 2026.

Rocks have no memory

March 7th

On March 26th, the latest effort will be published…

A Parkside View: Volumes 7 & 8

Collected from the editions released in 2022 and 2023, this collection features all fifty-nine essays from the newsletter along with five new essays written exclusively for the book.

Featuring “Voices” – “Comfort for the sake of consistency” – “Not a peep” – “Never notice (until you do)” – “Lunch at the end of the universe” – “Not when I was young”

The book will be available in print editions, as well as for Kindle. First day will definitely be true of Amazon, with other online booksellers potentially taking a few days before listing.

New material for today…

And we’re off…

Welcome to the Twenty-First Anniversary of In My Backpack.

(Yes. We’re pretty excited and proud of that accomplishment as well. And, yes. We agree. None of us can believe it’s been twenty-one years.)

We have a lot of celebrations planned for the month. And that begins with some new details about this…

A Parkside View: Volumes 7 & 8

March 26, 2024

We have a release date for Bob’s fifteenth published effort, A Parkside View: Volumes 7 & 8. Featuring sixty-four essays, the book will arrive in print and Kindle formats on March 26, 2024.

A Parkside View began its monthly run in July of 2016. The seventh and eighth volumes of the newsletter contained eighteen issues and featured essays that debuted exclusively on its pages along with works pulled from several archives of Bob’s writing. All fifty-nine essays from Volume 7 and Volume 8 are included in this collection, plus five essays that are being shared for the first time.

Bob will be delivering his usual uncommon observations about common things as he considers subjects such as the comfort of consistency, the impossibility of normal, disappearing tennis courts, information manipulated by time, and embracing chaos.

You can catch up on all of Bob’s published works—all in print and Kindle editions—by visiting his Amazon author page. In addition, many of his works are available from Barnes & Noble and other fine online booksellers.

Speaking of A Parkside View, the March edition will be released later this month. We are hoping to share a very special project with you, so look for it to begin circulating in a couple of weeks.

If you’re receiving the newsletter, thank you. Extremely appreciative of the support.

If you’re not receiving the newsletter… well… why not? Great material. Often with exclusive content. And, it’s free. Just send along an email or a message on one of our social media pages. We’ll get in touch and complete all the arrangements.

Today, we’re closing things up with two new essays. Thanks for joining us.
