Local Friends for

Local Business

A bit of history... 2018

If you're wondering what kind of activities Local Friends for Local Business has focused on, this is the best area to look at.

Below you will find the history of the effort for this year, including the details about the category from each month. (You can use the links at the end of this introduction to trace the program back to its start in January of 2012.)

Please keep in mind... Local Friends for Local Business is essentially a continuous work-in-progress. Any business names found on this page should not be interpreted as a pure recommendation. Consider the source... for instance, keep in mind that we cannot verify every person that has sent an e-mail or suggestion along for places they have visited and enjoyed. I'd love to say we have been to all of them. We haven't.

Every person is different... every business is different... and your experiences may vary. You have been so informed.

Plus... unfortunately... more than a few of the businesses we have visited have closed their doors. I decided to keep them listed -- In celebration of what they had been and what they meant to those that experienced them... and as a nod to the importance of your support. We are, quite literally, losing local businesses every day.

Look at this as a starting point. Details have been included here because someone -- mainly Terry and I, along with so many wonderful others -- far more often than not have enjoyed what we found. And, we wanted you to know.

Don't forget to look back...

Sandwiches

They are one of the central items for all of us. Literally. All of us -- around the world. No matter where you are, pause, take a look around, and you will about as close to certainly as it gets find some form of the food offering nearby.

Sandwiches.

During a simple, basic, average day, they can be lunch at home... the center of a picnic in the park... a break during a day of outside work... a meal shared with a friend while out and about... and the list goes on and on.

Get a bit more complex, and they can introduce you to cultures... nations... people and history and...

Sandwiches.

My Hometown

If you thought about a place where you lived during your life, and plans were being made to head there for a few days: What fill-in-the-blank is there and only there that you must get to during the visit? (With fill-in-the-blank meaning restaurants, stores, attractions, and on and on.)

Consider your hometown. Are there businesses you’ve seen and always wanted to visit, but never have? Are there businesses you really enjoy, but haven’t been to in some time? Have you ever looked around to see if there’s a business offering something you need, but you didn’t even know the business was there?

Cooling Things Off

As the temperatures climb, there are things all of us enjoy doing to cool off.

Ice cream... swimming pools... frosty beverages...

All of our neighborhoods offer special opportunities to enjoy heat without being too hot.

The Sun Will Come Out

There are certain things we do at different times of the year to prepare for the upcoming. Upcoming events... upcoming weather... upcoming activites and interests and on and on.

As the summer arrives, we are taking care of the yard, bringing furniture out of storage and placing it on the deck, checking over sporting goods and recreational equipment, and more. All to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful, warm weather.

Anything from prepping the grill to breaking out the kayaks is part of the challenge for this month. Get ready for summer (and have some good outdoor fun).

From the Garden

Are you looking to get your garden started? Do you head out to local nurseries and roadside stands for fruit and vegetables?

This month Local Friends is looking at the supplies you need to build and maintain your garden... and the items you bring to your table from it.

The Bunny Trail

As the weather begins improving in the northeast (and around the country), we arrive at the time to start considering outside work, like gardens. This month, we’re asking you to think about some of the things you might be looking toward: vegetable gardens, flower boxes and more.

Looking to add some raised beds for your veggies this year? How about a few planters for some herbs? Have you been thinking about landscaping projects? Fruit trees? Perhaps some lilacs?

The true definitions this month, as usual, are up to you. From eating at a restaurant to festivites in your home... birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and various special occasions... everyone can enjoy some quality fun.

Old Reliable

In some cases, we know the owners. In some cases, we know those stopping in to buy things. In all cases, they are the places we would never find if we lived someplace else, and yet we would need to find the equivalent of them in our new neighborhood.

One great part of these places, beyond the people, is that we know what we expect to find. They make food we find tasty and crave… they carry the brands or options we are looking for… they offer an environment we feel comfortable in.

Something New

As a new year starts for Local Friends, the challenge is headed to the very foundation of the effort... learning about your community, and supporting the small businesses nearby.

This month, wherever you may be, take a moment to look around. Find a plce you have never been before and step inside. Check out your neighborhood and find something new.
