When was the last time you played your guitar?

You’ve probably figured out that I’m not asking this specifically. There’s a bit more to it.

I like playing guitar. I appreciate the instrument, and I have collected more than a couple. They deserve to be played more often than they are.

I’m not particularly good at it. Could use a lot of practice, and should spend more time doing it.

But I like it.

For me, I just enjoy playing when I have a chance. It’s relaxing, and it gets me away from whatever I’m doing for a while. Pick up the guitar, grab some sheet music or my lesson notes, and drift away for an hour or so when I can.

And that’s more in tune with what I’m wondering. (See the joke there? In tune? Yeah, ok, not that funny. Anyway…)

It’s so easy to walk in the house, throw on casual clothes, flop in a chair and turn on the television. It’s an easy way of settling in, and I definitely enjoy spending time watching movies and shows.

But what kinds of things do you enjoy doing that take a bit of work to enjoy?

A few of my friends are outstanding cooks. I mean, could open their own restaurant brilliant. And prepping marinades, chopping vegetables, the entire process of cooking anything and everything is their escape.

I love cooking, love eating, hate dishes. That means more often than not my efforts in the kitchen can be based entirely on how many pans will need to be scrubbed later on.

I know people that consider their yard an escape. They sharpen the blades on their lawn mowers every other use. There is an entire schedule for lawn care, and a more detailed schedule for flower beds and any other garden. They have magnificently designed paths and walkways.

Wouldn’t you love a gazebo in your yard? Maybe a larger, screened in gazebo? Fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers?

We love those ideas at our house. But we do not have a gazebo. And I am not sharpening the blades on my mowers multiple times a summer. I barely have time to keep up with weeding my garden, never mind installing a new walkway and making sure the grass doesn’t begin an attempt to reclaim it.

Some folks like painting. Other enjoy knitting. Just shutting down, breaking away, investing some effort in a passion moments.

Good friend of ours chops wood. He says it’s great. Load up a cooler and the chainsaw, hop in the truck and drive off into the woods. No one bothering him for hours, a bit of physical exercise, and the phone never rings.

I’m not sure I’ll be heading into the yard or the woods. But I really should get one of my guitars out and start playing again soon.
