All about NaNo

Some thoughts while clicking around the NaNoWriMo web site and looking at author profiles…

·                    J.K. Rowling is easily the most popular name under “favorite authors.”  I didnt actually count the full number, but she seemed to be there every time.  I guess that shouldn’t be too surprising… heck… she’s even in my profile.

·                    On the other hand, as of 2am... heading into Monday morning with the Red Sox up two game to none over the Cardinals... there are only two people... two... out of 42,000 signed up that list Robert Fulghum as a favorite.  That includes me.  I was shocked.

·                    Wow... a large number of these authors like their anime…

·                    …and hate George Bush.

·                    There are a ton of people that, if they came to my site, would immediately get the idea of why the section I call 42 is the answer to everything.

·                    The site livejournal.com hosts a ton of these authors, although I’ve never explored the site to see how it works, what they charge, or the format they use.  Another one is called blogspot.com, but I haven’t looked there either.  No recommendations for either one, just an observation.

·                    Some of these web sites are great (check out my “A Momentary Lapse…” columns recently to see some links to a few that have become my favorites.  I have also set up a NaNo link section, so head over there too.)

·                    Some of these people have absolutely great working titles for their projects… and unfortunately, no links to check them out.  I’ll have to wait until the writing begins to see if they post any portions of their efforts.

·                    I need to raise the visual appearance of my web site… a lot.  From the graphics to the general layout, I have a pretty boring set up and should be doing better.

·                    There’s a fly in my coffee… yuck.  To tell you how horrible my mind is at running off on tangents… the answer is “the backstroke.”  If you remember that joke, well, I’m sorry.

·                    Ok, this was great.  I went to one author’s site, and there was a section for his friends.  Nothing unusual there.  But all of the friends were shown with both names and pictures.  Being the horrible male that I am, I absolutely had to click on the link for Stephanie, which showed her in a teddy-like top, cleavage there, but no face.  And when I got to her site this is the quote I found: “For all those men who say, Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.’ Heres an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage, why? Because women realize its not worth buying an entire Pig, just to get a little sausage...”  Yup, I liked that.  Unfortunately, the site forced you to register to send a message, a feature I hate.  So I couldn’t tell Stephanie that I was looking at her boobs, couldn’t tell her I liked her blurb, and won’t bother you with a link to the site.

·                    I’m stunned by the number of people that write in silence.  I can’t do it… I need something in the background.  Most of the time I don’t even pay attention to it once I get going, but I notice it when it’s missing.

·                    Hmm… lulu.com.  Never heard of it before.  Need to research this one.

·                    Some of the author’s web sites have some great comments.  We’ll credit Shiri for these two… “Some days it’s just not worth gnawing through the straps” and “Smash head on keyboard to continue.”

·                    I’m surprised how many published and successful authors take part in NaNo.  Now, I can only go by the publications and successes they list on their web site… because in every case so far I haven’t heard about them before.  And yet, last November when I was taking part I knew that when the day comes that I publish my best seller, and (hope upon hope) become a successful, selling author, I will continue to participate in NaNo.  Because the things I found out about myself last year, combined with the experiences I hope to have this year and after, are without question worth it.  Guess I shouldn’t be shocked to see published authors taking part after all.
